"I
can sense the heat of the sun. The angle of the log adds an amazing sense of
drama
to the composition. You’ve captured the mood of the tiger, I can see
it in the eye. The
best way to describe it is cold and detached ... and yet something is simmering
just below
the surface. It wouldn’t take much to pounce." Sharlene Stushnov-Lee
artist, Victoria, B.C.

WHAT PROMPTED THIS EXHIBITION?
Alice Saltiel’s fascination
with exotic wildcats began in the 1960’s.
When she relocated to Alberta, in 1972, North American
varieties were added to her repertoire. Somewhere along the way other
imagery caught her attention and cats no longer flowed from her brush.
And then, last Hallowe’en, when Alice opened forty-year-old files of
drawings and reference material for ideas on how to make-up as a
leopard, she was moved to paint the big cats once again.
We invite you to come and see her powerful interpretations of
these magnificent animals. Some
archival pieces will be displayed to illustrate just how different the
current work is from her earlier art.

THE MOUNTAINEER and THE ARTIST
October 14th, 2006 - January
14th, 2007

Sharon Wood and Alice, May 25, 2006
Held at The Whyte Museum of the Canadian
Rockies, in Banff, Alberta,
The Mountaineer and the Artist was an invitational exhibition
which was a part of
The Alpine Club of Canada's Centennial celebrations. Thirteen mountaineers
were paired with thirteen artists and together the pairs visited the
mountaineer's
favourite place, after which the artist then interpreted the landscape. It
was a
dynamically diverse show that has also been documented in an exquisite
catalogue as well as a DVD of interviews with the painters during their process.
I was paired with Canmore resident Sharon Wood who, in 1986, was first the
North
American woman to summit Mount Everest. She was also the first woman to
become a
certified Canadian Alpine Guide.
Coloured pencil drawing of Sharon, done as an aside from the
exhibition,
which I ultimately gave
to her for her 50th birthday, in May, 2007
Sharon selected The Grand
Sentinel, at Sentinel Pass, near Lake Louise. I chose
to create a painting
within a painting to portray both the scale of the sentinel and
feature the closeness of the rock, as she would have seen it as she climbed
it.
This also enabled me to feature the lichen with which she has a huge fascination.
