      In January of 2010
,  I was directed to Kari Lelek because she had
"modeling nude" on her bucket list.
I rallied the troupes and we set
a date for figure drawing.  Although she had never done it before she
was a complete natural.  When I expressed the desire to have the
luxury of extended time to paint her (not just sketch her) she permitted
me to photograph her.  Angel Messenger was the result ...

The idea I incubated for this painting took a twist when Kari was
compelled to bring me an eagle's feather (and a robin's nest).  She
had no way of knowing that the day she chose to give me these items
was the day before my Father's birthday.  Dad had an attraction to
birds, they showed up in all of his art.  To him they symbolized
freedom.  With dementia, he spent his last 6.5 years in the Veteran's
Wing at Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto (he died there November 1st,
2005).  Now, when I see a bird circling overhead, I imagine it's him
looking out for me.  Dad's clay bird vase and the eagle feather needed
to be included in the painting.

Kari continued modeling for us and became not only my muse but a
personal friend.  Christmas 2011, I photographed her gazing at a glass
blown pear.  The image begged me to paint her, again ...

FIGURE DRAWINGS

Drawing the human form is the perfect discipline to keep an artist's skills finely tuned.
When I lived in Canmore, I made every effort to attend the Tuesday evening sessions
when a group of artists assembled to work from a live model.
These drawings are some of the longer poses, from these evenings:

Selma Palmer is a wonderful woman who just happens to be somehow related to me.
We met at The International Saltiel Family Reunion in Barcelona (see below).  Her
spirit and face compelled me to paint her portrait, twice, in 2001.  Please understand
that portraiture is something I usually shy away from because, for me, achieving a
likeness is very difficult.  I gave these portraits to Selma and she in turn passed
them on, one to each of her two sons.

The Moshe Shaltiel Commission

I call this dynamic man King of The Saltiels because, to me, he is.  In 1990 when he was visiting Banff,
he called me, as he is wont to do everywhere he goes when he finds any Saltiels in telephone books.
What followed was my entering into the then developing Saltiel Family Worldwide.
http://www.shealtiel.com/shealtiel/today/welcome.asp
There are international family reunions every three years and while we haven't attended all of them,
we did go to Salonika, Greece in 1997 and to Barcelona, Spain in 2000.  Delightful friendships evolved
and we have both visited and hosted charming 'relatives' as a result of our meetings at these reunions.

I photograph him in my studio.

First, I block in all the elements

then, I manipulate his features

and develop them to a likeness Next, I refine the background

and finally, the finished portrait, an oil 24" x 36" ... completed January, 2005
