ART BOOKS
includes an introduction describing the history of exploration
and the early artistic activity generated by Jimmy Simpson, a legendary guide
and outfitter
who also collected art and painted in watercolours. This is followed by
brief biographies of
20 contemporary artists whose works are also included in the 48 colour plates,
all documented
and described, of which only seven have ever been published before.
It is an honour to have my painting Crowfoot Mountain Through the Looking Glass
(private collection) 1999 oil 36" x 54" featured on
the cover.

In addition this painting included:

Saint Nicolas Peak, 5" x7" watercolour 1993 (private
collection of Rick and Lynn Dale)

Jane's second book was released in
December, 2007:
MOUNT ASSINIBOINE: Images in Art

art
inspired by the remarkable Mount Assiniboine area of the Canadian Rockies from
1899 to 2007. Illustrations include black and white archival photographs
and over 40
colour plates, documented and described, which illustrate a wide variety of
styles and
media from a variety of artists, including A.P. Coleman, Carl Rungius, James
Simpson,
Belmore Browne, Barbara and A.C. Leighton, Catherine and Peter Whyte, W.J.
Phillips
and A.Y. Jackson. Of the images collected within, only five have been
published
previously.

I am thrilled to have these three

MAGICAL
FALLS
Between
Scarab
and Egypt Lakes, Banff National Park
2007
oil on canvas 24” x 36”
$4500.00
Above
is the painting I have submitted to the show and the following is the
accompanying a biography ...
In 1981,
when Bill was a Ranger for Alberta Provincial Parks he was transferred from
Wabamun to Bow Valley. Then, Bob
Reynolds was the Director of Parks for Kananaskis Country, a wood carver and a
member of the one-year-old CAAG. With
his encouragement I joined the group. We
lived in a residence at Bow Valley Park and I believed it was assumed that
‘when we moved to town’ I would take an executive position in the CAAG.
In 1986, we bought our house on 9th Avenue, moved in, and in
the April elections I became the president.
Serving in that capacity for one year, I went on to be newsletter editor,
coordinator of four consecutive Christmas Fairs and poster person.
I hand cut silk screens for the posters, which I printed by hand.
For my contributions, in 1998, I was honoured with a lifetime membership.
I’ve
always been an artist, first as a young student (1962 - 1966) followed by three
years as a commercial artist in Toronto, who painted on the side.
In 1969, I married Bill. We
lived in England for a year before ultimately moving to Banff (1972) where
painting became my full time occupation. Works
were small when our girls were young and it wasn’t until 1993 that I took the
challenge of a 5x7 foot canvas; the bull caribou commission hangs in the Banff
Caribou Lodge lobby. It spurred a
succession of big canvases and the creation of a studio, in our garage, to
accommodate them. After many
canvases and exhibitions - six of them solo shows at The Avens Gallery (2003 -
2008) - I believe I became exhausted. MAGICAL
FALLS is one of the few canvases that remain available from my ‘large
period’!
In September
2008, I took a nine-month painting hiatus, when we bought and moved to a
charming, character house in Claresholm, Alberta.
Here, just as in Canmore, I have met and enjoy the fellowship of some
incredible artists. I have no
‘real’ studio but, in the basement, I developed a tiny ‘hovel’
affectionately called The Anne Frank Room.
There, I delight in making small works.
I have
tremendous gratitude for the respect and patronage from Bow Valley residents.
This is undoubtedly a result of the CAAG launching me in the community of
Canmore.
THANK
YOU and HAPPY 30th BIRTHDAY to The CAAG!

DAVID THOMPSON
|

David Thompson
2005 oil 20" x
16"
Collection of R. W. Sandford,
Canmore, Alberta |
As there is no known image of David
Thompson I was commissioned by local Canmore historian, Bob
Sandford, to paint a portrait to help promote The North American
David Thompson Bicentennials
which
will take place on a continent-wide basis between 2007 and 2009
inclusively.
_______________________________________________________
The painting is done in the style
of the formal portrait of Alexander Mackenzie, by Sir Thomas Lawrence;
however,
I have shown Thompson in the clothes of a voyageur, an explorer
and mapmaker. Careful and considerable research
revealed there was
little
information to work with. I
found myself entering something of
a trance to sense how to begin and
proceed. On my palette I
mixed rich flesh tones, ambers and browns
then decisively
painted, watching in wonder as
David’s face emerged.
I
honoured written descriptions and defined his “snub
nose”
and “dark eyes” which became more
intense as I aged him to his mid thirties. He
was
thirty-seven when
he crossed the Continental Divide. The full beard on a photograph of a Thompson grandson, reputed to
resemble him, meant I had to rely on my understanding of anatomy
to
construct his
mouth and jaw. I made them firmly set to reflect his
endurance, determination and strength.
I retain the copyright of the Thompson portrait and
welcome enquires.
